The so-called “Romanesque” architectural style is not of Roman origin, but rather Lombard since it was probably conceived in our Region, in particular in Milan on the occasion of the renovation of the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio which took place in the XI century (the original structure dates back to the 4th century). This particular artistic style later spread in other regions of Northern Italy and Western Europe, mainly in Germany, Spain and England. “Romanesque” therefore stands for “Romance”, a term that identifies the neo-Latin languages, derived from Latin, and also, and more specifically the post-Carolingian architectural style.
This introduction is necessary to explain the stylistic philosophy of the structure of Valverde's parish church, currently dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary and to St. Stephen, the patron saint of the municipality. Dating back to the 12th century, but extensively remodeled up until the 19th century, the building still has a layout that makes it recognizable as being of Romanesque-Lombard style, a style that can be seen in particular on the left side and in the portal.
Curiously, all the texts that illustrate these architectural features do not mention the interesting bell tower surmounted by a very particular “basket cone”, a structure typical of many other places of worship in Milan and Pavia contemporary with the original construction of our parish church. Finally, inside the church there is a beautiful baptismal font dating back to 1581, even if the dating of this work is currently no longer visible.
