The shrine of the Apparition of the Madonna of Montelungo represents not only a significant place of worship for the faithful, but also a precious historical testimony linked to the spirituality and traditions of the area. This small but important sacred building preserves the memory of an event considered miraculous, deeply rooted in the popular devotion of the area.
According to tradition, the ancient Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montelungo was built to commemorate a miraculous intervention of the Virgin: the healing of a young deaf-mute woman from Lagagnolo. The Madonna supposedly commanded her to spread her message and request the construction of a church on the very site of the apparition. This miraculous event led to the construction of the first Sanctuary.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the ancient sacred building was demolished due to its unsafe condition. In 1942, construction of the new Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montelungo was completed on a hill deemed safer and more stable. It still represents an important spiritual reference point for the local community and pilgrims today.
In 1963, a memorial chapel was erected on the exact spot where the miracle supposedly occurred, where the ancient church once stood. This small structure, simple yet rich in meaning, is a tangible and permanent reminder of the extraordinary event that occurred there. The chapel was commissioned to keep alive the memory of the miracle and to offer a secluded space where the faithful can retreat for prayer, meditation, and spiritual recollection, symbolically returning to the heart of the Marian grace manifested at Montelungo.
