Inside the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Montelungo, the construction of which was completed in 1942 after the demolition of the ancient church, in danger of collapsing, it is still possible to admire a work of art of great historical and spiritual value. This precious element testifies to the deep bond between the place of worship and the miracle of the Madonna healing a poor deaf-mute woman from Logagnolo, making the site a destination of devotion and pilgrimage.
The work in question is a fresco transferred to canvas, depicting the Madonna breastfeeding the Child. Dating back to the 15th century, the fresco has undergone some alterations over time, but retains its expressive force and religious meaning intact. It is the only surviving material evidence of the ancient demolished church, from which it was carefully detached and transferred to the new structure of the Sanctuary once the work was completed in 1942.
The painting occupies a prominent position within the new building: it is located above the main altar, in a central point and perfectly visible to all the faithful. This placement is not accidental, but intended to underline the importance of the work in the liturgical and spiritual context of the Sanctuary, acting as a symbolic bridge between the past and the present of Marian devotion in Montelungo.
